Day 144 – Ps 12-14; John 8:28-59

Ps. 12-14

Definitely seeing a pattern in David’s Psalms of distress – always the confidence in God’s salvation and ultimate justice against evil.  And boy, how relevant the words of Ps 12 are still for today!!

John 8:28-59

I have had the idea in the past that Jesus was always cryptic with people, speaking in parables and never coming right out and directly saying who He was.  But the more I read the Bible, the more I realize this simply isn’t true!  Jesus was VERY direct about who He was, and this passage is another great example of that.  Especially considering that He was speaking to people who would have been very familiar with the law and the prophets (basically our Old Testament), because they would have understood much of the significance in what He was saying where we might miss some of it (like the examples from the Feast of Booths and His living water and light of the world statements).

They did indeed understand what He was saying, as evidenced by their reaction of wanting to stone Him when He said, “before Abraham was, I am” (Jn 8:58b).  He flat out told them He was God, and they didn’t like it.  I like the quote, evidently from Julius Caesar, “Men willingly believe what they wish.”  These people very clearly heard what Jesus was saying in this entire passage, but they did not accept it because they did not want to believe it.  I hope and pray that my own desires will not stand in the way of my seeing and hearing the truth.
