Ps. 15-16
David is one of several representations of Christ in the Bible story. He is also in the direct line of Christ. This adds interest to the fact that so many of David’s words could have been spoken by or about Christ. I believe his words are actually one of the major sources of Messianic prophecies found in the Old Testament. I see a couple of instances in Psalm 16.
One instance is verse 3. “As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.” Different translations state this differently, but this ESV translation, to me, points to Jesus’ many comments about the ones His Father has given Him; those who are the whole purpose for His mission here on Earth.
The other instance is verse 10. “For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption [some say decay].” This, to me, speaks of what happened to Jesus when He died on the cross, before His resurrection. We do not know what happened in those few days between death and resurrection, but since we know that He took the sins of the whole world on Him, it is reasonable to think that He visited Hell (Sheol). But He didn’t stay there. He broke the gates of Hell, defeated death, and rose again without ever seeing decay. Praise God!
John 9:1-23
I am pretty convinced that Jesus intentionally healed often on the Sabbath. I believe He did this to reveal the hypocrisy of those who put the Law above God. Ironically, in ‘keeping’ the Law the way they did, putting it above everything and using it to their advantage in any way they could, they were breaking the first and most important Law of all – “You shall have no other gods before me.”
The Jewish leaders failed to understand that the 10 commandments and the entire Law were not something to sell your soul to or to lord it over others with. They are, rather, a set of instructions to show us how to keep what Jesus said are the greatest two commandments. These are to love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself. If you are truly focused on these two things, the rest of the Law falls into place.
