Ps. 115

People often make the mistake of worshipping creation, or some aspect of it, rather than God who created it.  This makes no sense!  The creation is not even a measurable fraction of the one who made it.  This Psalm points out a similar nonsensical thing that people do.  Some worship their own creation.  Maybe they didn’t craft it themselves, but a human worshipping what another human made is essentially the same thing.  Now they are worshipping a creation of the creation – even further removed from the God to whom the worship belongs.

Ps. 116

“I love the LORD because He has heard my appeal for mercy.” (Ps. 116:1).  That is what it means to be saved.  When we recognize our need for help, that we are overcome by the ropes of death, and we call out to God, He is quick and generous to save us by His mercy.  Because of our impossible need and His unfathomable mercy, we respond to Him with love.  Jesus pointed to this truth in the book of Luke when He said that one who is forgiven much loves much.  John also shared this message when he wrote, “We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19).  God’s mercy is the expression of His great love for us.  And it is the reason we are able to love God by extending His mercy to others.

Ps. 117

You’ve gotta love a message that is short and to the point.  Of all the reasons to Praise God, and those reasons are innumerable, His great and everlasting love has got to be at the top of the list.

Ps. 118

Here we have the same message with lots more detail.  The LORD helps us; He gives us refuge.  He destroys our enemies before us, saving us from certain death.  He also disciplines us, so we might enter through His gates of righteousness.  God gave us light – His Son, our sacrifice.  All of this and so much more because, “…He is good; His faithful love endures forever.” (Ps. 118:29b).
