Luke 22
Luke gives a detail from the Last Supper that the other writers don’t include. When Jesus first took the cup He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves.” (Lk. 22:17b). This tells me that we don’t just partake of Jesus as individuals. We also share Him with each other as a unified body. The disciples evidently missed that point, as soon after they engaged in a dispute as to who among them was the greatest. Remember from yesterday that the one who has is the one who gives. Thus, we share Christ’s cup when we serve one another as He served us.
John 13
John wrote that Jesus washed His disciples’ feet because He knew what He had, who He was, and where He was going. True power doesn’t need to demonstrate itself. Instead, what Jesus knew to be true gave Him the freedom to serve those under Him. He did this as an example for all of his followers, so that what we know will give us the same confidence that He had. We, too, know who Jesus is. So we know that to say He is greater than us is beyond an understatement. The fact that One who is so much greater than us lowered Himself to make us clean gives us the same assurance Jesus had. We know what we have, who we are, and where we are going. And that true power gives us the same freedom to serve each other as He served us.
