For a full description of the (Y3) reading plan, see the “About” page.

  1. What attributes of God’s character does this passage reveal?
  2. How does the passage point to Jesus?
  3. How should the truth of this passage change me?
  4. How do the events of today’s reading help you better understand the grand narrative of Scripture?
Heb. 1-2

Luke, in his gospel, wrote of Jesus’ meeting with two of His disciples while they were traveling from Jerusalem to Emmaus.  On that journey, Jesus, “interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.” (Lk. 24:27b).  I often wish I could have been a fly on one of their shoulders, listening in to that conversation.  While that isn’t likely to happen, we do have something similar.  We have the book of Hebrews.

The author of Hebrews references Old Testament Scripture a lot.  Through these references he describes the person and work of Jesus Christ.  Beyond offering us the interpretation for these particular passages, though, the author’s use of Scripture also teaches us how to interpret other passages.  He confirms the prophetic nature of the Psalms, God’s word through the prophets, and God’s promises to men like Abraham and David.  We can then apply what we learn from his example as we read through the Scriptures ourselves.  As we do, we start to see the person and work of Jesus Christ prophesied in all the Scriptures.  God’s word is so amazing!

Heb. 3

“For Jesus is considered worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder has more honor than the house.” (Heb. 3:3).  I imagine this statement would have had quite an impact on a Jewish audience.  After all, Moses gave them the Law and the original tabernacle, and many believed these were the means to life-giving righteousness.  The part they missed, however, is that, while Moses directed the people to the Promised Land, He could not actually take them into it.  Therefore, Jesus is greater, because what Moses couldn’t do, Jesus can.  Moses was merely a foreshadowing of what was yet to come.
